In my grief about what is happening in the world, Alan, your words bring the solace of knowing that someone - you - also bears witness and feels “the entire bewildering weight of being alive.” A small synchronicity: yesterday I offered up a word to someone I was mentoring, describing her relationship with the world and I offered the word: undefended? Yes a heart undefended. Then I read this today, a deep and beautiful description of what it means to be an undefended heart in this aching and beautiful world. It seems such a small contribution at times, but I agree with you: I am glad that I am not numb, that I refuse to be numb, that I feel the world deeply. I also trust that from deep feelings from an undefended heart can come true action. But it begins with feeling.
Thanks for your ongoingness of showing up, over decades…Your words always help me.
